Rd 7: Gervarrius Owens | Pos – Safety | School – Houston
The Giants GM Joe Schoen capped off a successful draft by selecting safety Gervarrius Owens out of Houston in the 7th Round.
Owens was a full-time starter in 2022 and capitalized on his opportunity by amassing 74 tackles, one interception, eight pass breakups and two forced fumbles. Owens has a compact frame at 6’1 and weighing in at 200 pounds.
Making the Rounds:
Owens was well traveled during his college career playing for colleges such as Minnesota, Kansas State, Northeast Oklahoma A&M and then settling at Houston.
So, what’s there to like about Owens?
He has great foot speed and long-track explosiveness. Plays a physical game and good instincts and anticipation. Owens has exceptional ball-tracking skills and was a team captain for Houston Cougars defense. Owens does need to work on a few areas such as playing a little stiff at times and is often flat-footed.
Lastly, Owens will turn 25 years old this October and despite these flaws, Owens game has appeal, but will have an uphill battle to secure a roster spot on the 53-man roster. He will need to stand out on special teams.
