The New York Giants will be entering the off season with a projected $30,478.50M of cap space. Based on reports, the Giants should have an additional $2 to $3M in unclaimed bonuses and another $3,436,453M cap space from 2017; which should carry over to 2018. Now we’re looking at roughly $36-$37M in cap space. However; that dollar total should increase even higher as we should see GM Dave Gettleman make some moves (cuts/releases) this off season. Below I have assembled a few candidates that could be released:

  1. CB-Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie: DRC was a solid signing for the Giants, but he is now approaching 32 years old and that is ancient in the football world; especially at the CB position. By releasing him, the Giants would save $6.5M.
  2. OG-John Jerry: Speculation in Giants camp is that D.J Fluker will likely be re-signed and Ereck Flowers could be moved to guard, as he is a much better run blocker than a pass protector. If that is the case, releasing Jerry would save the Giants another $2.525M. They could keep him as a backup, but that would be an expensive decision to justify.
  3. WR-Dwayne Harris: Harris play has declined and at this point it would make perfect sense to release him; which would save the Giants $2.45M.
  4. WR-Brandon Marshall: Marshall was a major disappointment prior to his season ending injury and I would be very shocked if GM Dave Gettleman keeps him on the roster. Instead, look for Marshall to be released and an additional savings of $5.156M. Besides TE Evan Engram should move to WR as he plays like one anyway and the Giants can go back to a traditional TE to improve the running game.

Of course, these are only 4 examples as their will be other players being released; which will only add to the cap space. For now, using just these four examples the Giants would have a total of approximately $49 to $50M in cap space. It must be noted that Getttleman could also decide to cut Eli Manning which would add additional money towards the cap space (approx $15M), however; all indications I’m hearing is that Gettleman has full intention of bringing Manning back for 2018.

Therefore, with nearly $50M available this off season for the Giants, Gettleman should have the flexibility to add talent and depth through free agency and the draft to get the Giants back in the direction.
