The New York Giants were trailing 20-0 to the Arizona Cardinals, which had them scoreless over the finish 6 quarters to start a season; the last time that happened was in 1934. Then in the 2nd half the season erupted for 31 points to seal a dramatic come from behind victory, which was the most points scored in the 2nd half since 1949. So which Giants team are we going to see when they face the San Francisco 49ers? The 49ers are 2-0 with victories over the Steelers and the Rams. Let’s take a look at my top 3 ways the Giants could win and/or lose against the 49ers.

Top 3 ways the Giants could win.

  • Daniel Jones Encore: Daniel Jones production in the 2nd half of the Giants win was arguably his best performance as a Giant. If the Giants have any chance of stealing a victory from the jaws of the 49ers, Jones must have a repeat performance.
  • Start the Game Strong: The Giants needed to start the game strong against the Cardinal; which they didn’t and the result was a 20-0 deficit at halftime. The Giants can’t afford to allow the 49ers that same luxury, because the results will be different.
  • Win the Battle in the Trenches: Over the first two games thus far and I understand it’s a small sample, the Giants have allowed too many yards on the ground (ranked 25th) and have allowed untimely big plays through the air.

Top 3 ways the Giants could lose.

  • Turnovers: The Giants have lost the battle of the turnovers in their first two games and by all accounts they could easily be 0-2. If this trend continues against the 49ers, the Giants will suffer their 2nd loss of the season.
  • Surrendering Big Plays: The 49ers have a handful of explosive and dynamic playmakers such as; Christian McCaffery and Deebo Samuels. The Giants need to minimize the damage and not allow the 49ers big chunk of yards and make it easy for them to score touchdowns.
  • Time of Possession: One way to keep the ball away from the 49ers playmakers is to win the time of possession category. This is easier said than done as the 49ers have a well-balanced offense led by quarterback Brock Purdy.

The Giants are big time underdogs in this game (10 points) and perhaps well deserved. However; football isn’t won on paper, but rather on the field and it’s been proven many times that any team could win on any given Sunday, well in this case Thursday. However, the Giants will need to play nearly a perfect game and catch a couple of breaks along the way if they expect a win.
