The New York Giants are celebrating the teams 100 seasons this year and honored many of the top 100 Giant greats before the game. Unfortunately, all these past Giant greats are too old to suit up as the Giants were embarrassed by the Vikings 28-6. Front and center of this dismal display by the Giants was Quarterback Daniel Jones who played possibly the worse game as a Giant. The Giants will face the Washington Commanders who also suffered a lost on opening day, but there were many more positives in Washington’s loss than the Giants. The only possible saving grace any optimistic Giants fan has is that Jones will be facing the only team that he has had the best results from in his NFL career. Jones has a 6-2-1 record against Washington with a 10/3 TD-INT ratio and a 98% QB rating. Perhaps Jones rebounds and continues his success against Washington.
Daniel Jones was on the hot seat entering this game and based on his performance, it’s safe to say that the Giants GM Joe Schoen will more than likely be looking for a new Quarterback in 2025. Whether that via a trade or through the draft or perhaps both, it seems evident that changes need to be made. With that being said, will Daboll put Jones on a very short leash or will he give Jones more time (starts) to reverse his current trend? My guess is that Daboll will ride with Jones a lot longer than many Giant fans would like.
An argument can be made that other Quarterbacks along with Jones had struggled on opening. Two notable Quarterbacks who suffered season ending injuries like Jones were Joe Burrow and Kirk Cousins. Both suffered injuries last year, which shortened their respective seasons, while only getting limited snaps this pre-season similar to Jones. I am not proclaiming that Jones shouldn’t take accountability, he absolutely should, and his performance was a disaster. From someone who has been a huge supporter from day 1 of Daniel Jones, I believe the writing is on the wall and unless Jones plays like the next Eli Manning for how many more starts, he gets, 2024 appears to be Daniel Jones final year as a Giant.
