New York Giants rookie quarterback Tommy DeVito’s fairy tale season continues with a come from behind victory over the Green Bay Packers 24-22. The Giants have now won 3 straight games and are mathematically still in playoff contention with a 5-8 record. Whether they make the playoffs or not is irrelevant as their remaining games is not favorable. The story line this season is the sudden success of UDFA Tommy DeVito who has taken over the hearts of all Giant fans. DeVito’s performance has brought memories of another UDFA quarterback who also played college in the state of Illinois by the name of Tony Romo. Romo was a UDFA signing by the Cowboys and sat behind Drew Bledsoe until he got his chance against the New York Giants after Bledsoe suffered an injury.
There have been notable UDFA quarterbacks who took advantage of their opportunities either due to injuries or poor play and they are Jake Delhomme (Carolina Panthers), Jeff Garcia (San Francisco 49ers), Warren Moon (Houston Oilers) and lastly Kurt Warner (St, Louis Rams). Could DeVito follow the footsteps of any of these 5 quarterbacks and find a home in the NFL as a starting quarterback if not the Giants, but for another team? Thus far over his first 5 games played, DeVito has compiled a stat line of 83 completions in 126 attempts with 855 passing yards with over a 2 to 1 TD/INT ratio (8/3). These equate to a full season stat line of 2500+ passing yards with 24 touchdowns and 9 interceptions.
Whether or not Tommy “Cutlets” DeVito can continue his fairy tale journey is still an unknown and his success shouldn’t derail the Giants from drafting a quarterback. However, Giant fans are enjoying every second of it and possibly we are witnessing a rebirth of another Tony Romo career blossoming before our eyes. If so, the Giants just might have found their best UDFA signing since Victor Cruz and maybe, just maybe they’ve found their quarterback of the future. Perhaps not just yet, but it’s always nice to dream a bit.
