GM Dave Gettleman has done a great job this off season with the much needed talent in free agency on both sides of the ball. Now with the draft nearly two weeks away, he must continue this trend in arguably the most important draft of his career.

Gettleman must make this draft be his best as the Giants GM or it could be his final season as their GM.  There have been speculations that Gettleman could shock Giant nation and reach for an edge rusher at #11. Prospects such as Gregory Rousseau, Kwity Paye, Jaelen Phillips, and even Azeez Ojulari have been mentioned as possible selections for the Giants in the 1st round.

There might be many reasons why Dave Gettleman would pick one of these prospects in round 1, but there’s only one reason why he won’t and I believe it out weighs all the reasons he would and that’s because Gettleman will try to keep his job as it is possibly hanging by a thread at this point. Gettleman knows that he must get this pick right or he could be out the door even before the end of the season. This is why I believe Gettleman will not reach in round 1, he will make the safest pick possible that will bring him instant success and help secure his job moving forward.

If Gettleman is successful in round 1 that will certainly help his case, however; he would improve his chances even more if he can make solid selections with his remaining picks in the draft.  One major factor in the Giants past two drafts is the impact Head Coach Joe Judge makes as he seems to be more involved in the decision making than previous Head Coach Pat Shurmur was with Gettleman. This could be the X factor for Gettleman remaining the GM in 2021 and possibly beyond. This will be the most intense draft process for Dave Gettleman as a GM for the Giants as he knows it’s going to be a make or break moment for him once the Giants are on the clock.
