Lots of rumors flying around across many social media sites regarding the possibility of Matthew Stafford becoming a New York Giant. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Stafford has a cap hit of $49.6M in 2025 with a $23M base salary, which is not guaranteed, and a guaranteed $4 million roster bonus. Offering Stafford a new contract would lower Stafford’s cap hit, whereas Stafford would benefit getting a new deal is because he doesn’t have enough guaranteed money and understands that he doesn’t have any security beyond his roster bonus. So, with this information already provided, let’s look at three teams that would seem like realistic options for Stafford and the probability he’ll sign with them.
- New York Giants: GM Joe Schoen reality is that he could only have one more season to prove to ownership that’s he’s the right man for the job, so he could decide to place his fate on the shoulders of Matthew Stafford. Also, there’s a family connection of Stafford in New York now as the Giants just recently hired former Jacksonville Jaguars assistant Chad Hall to be their new assistant quarterback’s coach. Hall is Stafford’s brother-in-law and the brother of his wife, Kelly. If the Rams and Stafford can’t come to an agreement on a new deal. We could see the Rams and Stafford respectfully part ways. Probability of being a Giant-15%
- Minnesota Vikings: If Stafford moves on from the Rams, it will seem fitting that he returns to the NFC North where he started his career in Detroit. The success the Vikings had with Darnold (14-3) it would seem logical that they would want to continue this success by bringing back Sam Darnold. However, if Darnold is offered a better deal elsewhere, I’m not so sure the Vikings would hand over the offense to JJ McCarthy. Lastly, Stafford won a Super Bowl with Kevin O’Connell back in 2022, so that could swing the pendulum towards the Vikings favor. Probability of being a Viking-20%
- Los Angeles Rams: The Rams were so close to beating the Eagles on the road in the NFC Championship game. The notice of Stafford leaving the Rams would be a far-fetched notion if not for the reports that Cooper Kupp could be possibly on his way out of Los Angeles, which doesn’t sit well with Matthew Stafford. It has been reported that the Rams and Stafford’s agent are hoping to finalize a deal to keep him in Los Angeles as they are only a few pieces away of being a serious contender. Probability of returning to the Rams-65%
Reports vary on what a new contract would look like for Stafford. Many have speculated that it could be somewhere around three years/$40M-50M per year with $85M guaranteed. Seems like a lot for a 37-year-old QB entering his twilight years. Lastly, there are two team’s that could be considered as a dark horse in the Matthew Stafford sweepstakes, and they are the New York Jets and the San Francisco 49ers. The Jets just informed Aaron Rodgers that they are moving on from him and will be aggressively looking to bring in a veteran Quarterback. Then there’s the 49ers who could consider Stafford over Brock Purdy.
