Round 2: The Giants Select WR Wan’Dale Robinson

Surprise! Here’s a pick I am absolutely sure no realistic mock draft had, but who cares. The New York Football Giants and Joe Schoen were extremely purposeful and methodical with their draft picks this year. Generally considered a 3^rd round, gadget player, Wan’Dale Robinson might be a smaller guy in stature, but he plays like he’s 6’5”.

Slot Receiver Addition:

Robinson is extremely versatile to play the slot, RB, and even outside, however, he is not best suited against press-man coverage. Ideally, he is your starting slot receiver and I know what you’re thinking, don’t we already have Sterling Shepard and Kadarius Toney? Shepard is coming off a late-season injury and there is no timetable for his return. We also saw last season Toney can play on the outside.

Brian Daboll runs a spread offense so if he and Schoen identified Robinson as a fit for that style of offense there is only so much we can say until we see him on the field. Comps we are currently hearing are Cole Beasley, Deebo Samuel light, and dare I say Tyreek Hill light. This kid is about getting the ball in his hands making defenders miss while getting upfield.

Expectations:

I expect him to be used all over the field with specific plays in the screen/play-action game to get the ball in his hands. Schoen said “Again, he’s a generator when the ball is in his hands. He can run after the catch. He can separate from DBs, he gets open.” He played some running back at Nebraska which also showcases his versatility. If you look at Daboll and Kafka’s past they are creative coordinators using versatility and speed. Time will tell how this works out within the scheme, utilization, and production, but overall, this is another weapon in a previously ugly offense that couldn’t move the ball.
