Manning has a Good Game

Eli Manning turned back the clock on Monday night in San Francisco.  He finished the contest completing 19 out of 31 passes for 188 yards and 3 TDs.  Manning looked comfortable behind the offensive line, especially on the first touchdown to Odell.  Eli slid up, then stepped to the left to perfectly time a strike to the back of the end zone over 3 defenders.  Those small movements by Eli within the pocket helped No. 10 all night.

THE GOOD: The best part of the game for Manning was the final quarter, where his 36th career game-winning drive put him in 3rd place all-time behind Big Ben and Drew Brees, who each have 40.  It also was the 27th 4th quarter comeback of his career.

He was 6-9 for 69 yards and a TD on the last drive.   He finished off the Niners with a well thrown out pattern to Sterling Shepard.  The ball had just enough zip on it that the corner had no chance of jumping the route.  Numerous times Eli stepped up in the pocket and made a great throw including the ball to Evan Engram over two defenders.   While it was a very hard catch, Engram dropped it again.  Even the 1st pass of the game to Beckham had extra velocity on it and Beckham dropped it.  Eli looked loose and competed.

Manning was impressive on each and every roll out.   Shurmur should Move Eli outside the pocket more often…it works.

THE BAD: He took a sack, and couldn’t punch it in the end zone on two occasions where the team had to settle for field goals.  On the first red zone field goal, he missed Odell in the slot and handed it off when the obvious play was to audible and throw the quick slant to Beckham.

THE UGLY: Late in the 4th quarter, Odell burned two defenders and Eli should’ve let the ball fly a tad earlier.  It was severely underthrown and a missed touchdown opportunity.  Eli was seeing the field well last night [Tim Hasselback ESPN].  The Giants QB should have had the ability to check out of certain formations.  Running from a trips left and letting the Oline single up was not a very good idea…in fact ugly!

Overall…Manning was crisp, so there isn’t much to harp on here. The Giants sit at 2-7, and managing a win against the lower talented team.

Eli Manning gets a B+ for his performance.
