This will be part 5 spotlighting the most important offensive position for the Giants in 2021; which is Quarterback. Daniel Jones is entering his 3rd year of his rookie deal and Head Coach Joe Judge was recently quoted as stating “Daniel Jones is our quarterback”. The Giants brain trust went all out in free agency and in the draft to give Jones an ample of offensive weapons for him to succeed. Let’s take a look at the projected starter, backups and others on the outside looking in.

Starter:

  • Daniel Jones: Most of the offensive additions through free agency and in the draft were directly pointed towards giving Daniel Jones enough weapons to succeed. This is Jones 3rd season and the 2nd year under OC Jason Garrett offensive system. Jones must take a big enough step in 2021 to quiet the critics and to ensure that Dave Gettleman didn’t make a mistake drafting him. If not, the Giants have an extra 1st round pick in 2022 (from the Bears); which could wind up somewhere in the top 10 to find Jones replacement.

Backup:

  • Mike Glennon: Last year’s backup Colt McCoy did an admirable job for the Giants, but in OC Jason Garrett’s offensive, the team wants to be more vertical in the passing game and Glennon has a canon attached to his right shoulder.

On the Outside Looking In:

  • Clayton Thorson: Thorson was signed midway through the 2020 season and spent most of his time on the practice squad. This will more than likely be his destination in 2021, as his chances of making the final cuts are slim to none.

The Giants will more than likely only carry two quarterbacks on the final roster and we could see Clayton Thorson being replaced once all teams around the league make their cuts and a more talented quarterbacks hit the waiver wire. One spot on the practice squad should be assigned to a quarterback; which is standard practice throughout the NFL.  It should be interesting to see if there are any notable names being released over the next few weeks that could peek the Giants interest.
